DOI: 10.17160/josha.7.3.680

When undertaking a hermeneutic-philosophical discourse, centered on the notion of Bildung or human formation, it emerges as an epistemic objective to provide meaningful explanations in the field of the Sciences of the Spirit. Here, Hans-Georg Gadamer has had a fruitful philosophical innovation that affects both the understanding of man and ethics and politics. This research on his contributions to the Bildung is divided into two questions.

A libro abierto - An open book

Sebastián Vishnopolska

Languages: Spanish, Castilian

DOI: 10.17160/josha.7.3.676

In the 1990s, scientists started to discuss how to sequence the human genome, the complete list of genes encoded in human DNA. Two research groups, one directed by James Watson and funded by NIH grants, and another one supervised by Craig Venter and financed by private funding, started a race to be the first one to obtain the complete sequence. In 2000, the US President Bill Clinton, together with Venter and Francis Collins (Watson’s successor), announced that the first draft of the human genome was available. In the last years, cost reduction for sequencing the whole human DNA open several research fields, such as cancer genomics, pharmacogenomics, diagnosis of rare diseases, and genomics of pregnancy, among many others. In the present article, originally published in El Gato y La Caja, the history and impact of this discovery is presented.

Desarrollo de Canales de Microfluidica - Development of microfluidic Channels

Ana Belén Peñaherrera Pazmiño

Languages: Spanish, Castilian

DOI: 10.17160/josha.7.3.671

The general objective of this thesis is to develop and investigate microfluidic devices to be applied to the culture of eukaryotic cells and the study of fluids in porous media. During this thesis work, microfluidic devices have been successfully developed, which were applied in the culture of both adherent and suspended cells and in the analysis of flow in porous media. A new method of manufacturing microfluidic devices has been developed the manufacturing of microdevices possible in the country (and in other developing countries), without the need of access to a cleanroom, which will make the massification of microfluidic possible.

La meritocracia te la debo - Endebted Meritocracy

Sol Minoldo

Languages: Spanish, Castilian

DOI: 10.17160/josha.7.3.668

A meritocracy is a society in which success and failure belong to those who 'deserve' them. What you get depends directly on the decisions you make and on archiving the right balance between responsibility and audacity. Yet, a key point is frequently overlooked: identical circumstances, means, and opportunities must be guaranteed for meritocracy to make sense. In this article, Sol Minoldo highlights the danger of the reverse the logic, that is, assuming that the different achievements are reliable proof that some made more effort than others, and discusses what a higher performance might actually reflect.

Inmortal

Ezequiel Calvo Roitberg

Languages: Spanish, Castilian

DOI: 10.17160/josha.7.2.658

This is one of many Articles El Gato y La Caja shares with the JOSHA Journal. This time in the field of Life and Sciences Ezequiel Calvo presents an incredible story about Henrietta Lacks, a woman that changes and improve forever all the labs around the world. Shortly after being diagnosed (and without her consent) a small piece of Henrietta Lacks´ tumor was cut out and put it in a glass dish. Surprisingly, her uterine-cervical cancer cells had the ability to grow indefinitely. In this single immoral act, the beginning of a revolution in cell biology had occurred. On October 4, 1951, Henrietta Lacks died without knowing that a little piece of her was going to be found in almost every laboratory in the world that uses cell culture. This is her story.

La lengua degenerada

Sol Minoldo, Juan Cruz Balian

Languages: Spanish, Castilian

DOI: 10.17160/josha.7.2.651

Languages that attribute a grammatical gender to objects might induce a biased effect on how these objects are perceived. In a famous study by Lera Boroditsky, a list of 24 reverse-gendered nouns was prepared in Spanish and German. In each language, half of them were feminine and half masculine. Native Spanish and German speakers were shown the nouns, written in English, and asked about the first three adjectives that came to their minds. For instance, the word key is masculine in German. German speakers described keys as hard, heavy, metallic, and useful. In contrast, Spanish speakers described them as golden, small, adorable, shiny, and tiny. Conversely, the word bridge is feminine in German, and German speakers described bridges as beautiful, elegant, fragile, pretty, quiet, slender. Spanish speakers said that they were big, dangerous, strong, resistant, imposing, and long.

Perfil Clinico de Pacientes con Trastornos de la Conducta Alimentaria - Clinical Profile of Patients with Eating Disorders

Tatiana T. Castañeda

Languages: Spanish, Castilian

DOI: 10.17160/josha.7.2.648

The main objective of the present theoretical review is to provide a detailed description of the clinical profile of subjects suffering from an Eating Disorder. To this end, documentary observation and content analysis were used as data collection and systematization techniques, respectively. The above was done by reviewing a total sample of 49 electronic articles that gave an account of the incident factors in eating disorders. The results obtained indicate the relevance of cognitive distortions of body image in the maintenance and prognosis of ACTs. Taking into account the aforementioned, a review of the main theoretical contributions describing the clinical profile of patients with eating disorders will be carried out. In particular about Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN).
