In this interview Artur Lupashko shares insights of the hotel real estate market in Ukraine. The war had an significant impact on the hotel business and the market has to face new challenges. The publication of James Joyce’s Ulysses on 2nd February 1922 was a seminal event in literature and modernism. Determined to write the defining novel of the new century, Joyce spent seven years writing a masterwork of realism and symbolism, written in a way that no one has ever managed to replicate. Joyce famously declared that if Dublin was ever destroyed it could be reconstructed from the pages of his great novel Ulysses. The Dictionary of Irish Biography tells us that Joyce gave “infinitely subtle attention to the subjectivity of an insignificant Dubliner called Bloom” and by doing so “created one of the greatest figures of twentieth-century fiction, and the novel has been permanently altered by what he did.”

As we move into the third decade of the 21st century, surveillance capitalism is the dominant economic institution of our time. Dr. Shoshana Zuboff, professor emeritus at Harvard Business School and the author of The Age of Surveillance Capitalism -says “Facebook is not just any corporation. It reached trillion-dollar status in a single decade by applying the logic of what I call surveillance capitalism — an economic system built on the secret extraction and manipulation of human data — to its vision of connecting the entire world. No secret extraction means no illegitimate concentrations of knowledge about people. No concentrations of knowledge means no targeting algorithms. No targeting means that corporations can no longer control and curate information flows and social speech or shape human behavior to favor their interests. Regulating extraction would eliminate the surveillance dividend and with it the financial incentives for surveillance.

Evelyn Waugh, the finest English prose stylist of his time, was not an easy character who drank and used tablets at will, regardless of the consequences. Dear josha-journal readers, While we were still thinking mainly about Corona when we wrote the last editorial and wished our readers a happy new year 2022, we are thrown back on the hard ground of facts only two months later. There is a war going on in Europe, an unimaginable event for all of us! Especially the Josha team, which since its foundation has always been committed to international friendship and cooperation across all territorial borders, is horrified. Our contributor Silke therefore dedicates an article to the attacked country of Ukraine with its anthem and the context of its creation. We will not be stopped in our quest to make science and art accessible to all and wish all readers a successful read despite the dramatic events.

The paper seeks out to examine the status, roles, and functions of ‘Ulamā in Borno from the seventeenth century to the twentieth century. The high ‘Ulamā in Borno were those who had an official position either in the learned orthodox hierarchy or in the Sufi mystical one. Being an ‘Ulamā is a prime status honor in the Borno. They also have considerable power and a great influence on most Muslims in the Borno society. Thus, they have played a significant role in the propagation, dissemination, and development of Islamic religious knowledge, both Qur’anic education, and Islamic sciences in West Africa in particular and Africa in general. They also serve as intelligentsia, preachers, Imams, teachers, and supernatural endeavors of the state.

Sigmund Freud described very few cases, but more details have come out over the years despite the efforts of the Freud estate to embargo embarrassing records. Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen, a leading historian of psychoanalysis, has described thirty-eight patients treated by Freud. He refrains from taking into account Freud’s interpretations, instead providing an account of how Freud interacted with his patients, contrasting with the canonical version. The conclusion he draws is that Freud’s cures were largely ineffectual, when they were not downright destructive. Relevant aspects of the background and circumstances of the cases is provided. Many patients were of aristocratic descent, some enormously wealthy, a significant number were Jewish, while Americans were given priority because of the high value of the US dollar. It also provides an insight into the fading world of fin de siècle Vienna and how incestuous was the Jewish circle of Freud, his family and patients.
