Borno is famously known for its remarkable role in the dissemination of Qur’anic education and scholarship in West Africa in particular and Africa in general, before, during and after the colonial era. Today, despite many challenges and the misconceptions and backwardness attributed to the Qur’anic education and scholarship in the polity, it goes hand-in-hand with the Islamiyah system of education and the Western type of education. This paper attempts to combine both the anthropological and historical approaches to describe the processes of traditional Qur’anic education and scholarship in Borno, especially the recent trends. It examines the origin, types, methods, and stages of the Qur’anic education. The paper concludes that the status of Qur’anic education and scholarship in Borno is set for the heights regardless of the socio-cultural challenges and the misconceptions and backwardness attributed to it. It further suggests ways to fortify the development of the Qur’anic education and scholarship in Borno against all the emerging challenges and problems.
