In this paper we exclusively discuss the structure of a typical jazz arrangement, providing some indications concerning, predominantly, the writing methodologies. We propose, as a model, a simple jazz arrangement of the renowned Coltrane's composition "Giant Steps", suitable for a mid-size ensemble. The ensemble consists of seven elements altogether: trumpet, alto sax, tenor sax, trombone, piano, double bass, drums. The various harmonization techniques, such as the diatonic parallelism and the tonicization, are herein mentioned but not addressed. In fact, we simply reveal, section by section, the strategies we have exploited in order to obtain the desired result.
